experience with the implementation
of Directive 2004/43.
Cloning
Cloning is not currently used in
the poultry industry, however the
Association of Poultry Processors
and Poultry Trade in the EU
Countries argues that the option
should be kept open for future use in
breeding and made a joint position
with the European Poultry Breeders
and European Forum of Farm Animal
Breeders, to the commission in 2010.
The latest European Food Safety
Authority update, from September
2010, however, concludes that not
enough information is available for
an assessment of food safety, animal
health and welfare aspects of cloning.
The association notes that the
European Parliament was unable to
compromise on a request for the
mandatory labeling of food derived
from the o;spring of cloned animals,
irrespective of the technical and
the practical implications of such
mandatory labeling. The commission
promised a new proposal on novel
foods and labeling.
demands for fresh poultry meat. The
association disagrees with the use
of chemical substances, but could
embrace an organic substance if
consumers were in agreement.
Further, the association says that it can
advocate a reduction in Campylobacter
contamination, but not zero tolerance,
which may only be possible through
use of methods such as irradiation.
Food and feed safety
Commission proposals on
Salmonella were due to come into
force in December 2011. From this date,
Salmonella enteriditis and Salmonella
typhimurium must be absent in 25g
samples of poultry meat. Poultry
meat Salmonella serotyping at farm
level becomes a requirement and is
introduced for the handling of those
flocks at the slaughterhouse. The food
business operator is responsible for
risk assessments and risk assessment
management, but with regard to the
control of Salmonella, an agreement
with the supervising competent
authority is crucial.
In April 2011, the European Food
Safety Authority published a report
evaluating the risks of Campylobacter
and suggested measures for its control
on farm, at the slaughterhouse and
during transport. The safety authority’s
suggestions for interventions,
such as irradiation, freezing and
chemical treatment of meat are not
realistic options in the Association
of Poultry Processors and Poultry
Trade in the EU Countries' view, as
Antimicrobial resistance
March 2011, the association
contributed to the European Medicines
Agency consultation on antimicrobial
resistance. In April 2011, the European
Parliament called for tougher controls
on the use of antibiotics in animal
production. The Association of Poultry
Processors and Poultry Trade in the EU
Countries notes that it is committed to
the responsible use of antimicrobials
in animal production and is calling
for harmonization of their use across
the EU. Additionally, it notes, possible
conflicts between prescription and
administration need to be clarified and,
once initiatives become legislation,
third countries exporting to the EU
must comply with the same measures.
