Dr H Graham
Purchase dies
Dr H Graham Purchase, co-developer of
the HV T Marek’s disease vaccine died during
mid-March.
He was a graduate of the University
of Pretoria, Onderstepoort Veterinary
College, graduating in 1959. He undertook
postgraduate research at the Avian Diseases
and Oncology Laboratory in East Lansing,
Michigan, in 1961.
Over the next five years he succeeded in
developing a practical Marek’s disease vaccine
which became the basis of protection against
this infection, which was responsible for
significant loss in both egg and broiler industries.
He was a founding diplomat of the
American College of Poultry Veterinarians and
was a diplomat and president of the American
College of Veterinary Microbiologists.
Dr Purchase received several honours,
including the 1971 Arthur S Fleming Award
and the USDA Distinguished Service Award.
Harvard research shows
daily egg consumption is
harmless
A recent report in the peer-reviewed
American Society for Clinical Nutrition
demonstrated that consumption of eggs was
not associated with any “clinically meaningful
di;erences in fasting glucose, fasting insulin
or measures of insulin resistance.”
The study conducted by researchers
a;liated with the Harvard Medical School,
University of Washington, Colorado School
of Public Health and Northwestern University
comprised a prospective study on nearly
4,000 men and women enrolled in the
Cardiovascular Health Study, conducted from
1989 to 2007.
An important aspect of the study was the
confirmation that egg intake ranging from
one per month to almost daily had no e;ect
on the incidence rate of type II diabetes in
either gender.
This report adds to the growing literature
confirming that eggs are a safe and nutritious
component in daily diets.
