An archive is now available for
Expert advice on controlling avian
influenza, an online seminar
presented in September.
Sponsored by Intervet and
presented by Poultry International
and Industria Avicola magazines,
join avian influenza experts, Dr
Ilaria Capua and Dr Les Sims, for
advice on surveillance, control and
eradication of the H5N1 virus. Drs
Capua and Sims are at the forefront
of H5N1 research and share what
they have learned from their years
of study and also experience of
recent outbreaks of AI. To view the

Coolair’s innovative cast aluminum disc with
captured bearings extends bearing life up to
7 times by placing the drive load directly over
the bearings.

Control of Marek’s
disease and IBD
Efficacy studies in Brazil were
presented for Merial’s new vaccine,
which comprises a turkey herpesvirus
vector, modified to express antigenic
polypeptide components of the VP2
protein of infectious bursal disease
(IBD) virus. It can be administered
by the in-ovo route and stimulates
antibody protection against both
Marek’s disease virus and a range of
IBD viruses. Challenge studies were
conducted against two IBD isolates in
Brazil (52-70 and F6023). The vaccine
provided 86% and 95% protection,
respectively, against MD and IBD
challenges when administered in-ovo.
Protection against IBD increased to
100% when the chicks were vaccinated
subcutaneously at day-old. Control
studies showed 90-100% protection
against the virulent F6023 strain,
which has emerged as a significant
pathogen in Brazil. In one field trial,
three consecutive flocks of broilers
achieved an average production
efficiency index (PEI) of 296 with
evidence of exposure to IBD. The two
flocks after the introduction of the
vaccine attained a PEI of 347, while
mortality was reduced from 5.3% to
4.5% and feed conversion improved
from 1.84 to 1.75.
Necrotic enteritis vaccine
It is not uncommon for flocks to be
affected by clostridial enterotoxaemia –
manifested as necrotic enteritis – when
using vaccines against coccidiosis. This
may allow low-grade Eimeria maxima

A Fan of
Low Maintenance
As a working farmer, you don’t have a lot of
free time on your hands. The last thing you
need is another chore added to your list,
especially something as time-consuming as
fan maintenance and repairs.

Our goal is that you never have to. That’s why
we build Coolair fans for the long run. They are
finely-tuned, efficient machines built to endure.
Coolair fans may look much the same as
others, but look closer. Captured ball bearings
extend the fan life seven times greater than the
industry average. The precision-machined hub,
fan belt and tensioner ensure extended belt
life. Our blades are thicker, increasing durability.
Plus, our damper doors are rugged and
streamlined, making them a more effective
choice than any other shutter on the market.
Sure, you may be able to find a cheaper fan.
And you may get a package deal that includes
a fan. But unless you have a genuine Coolair
fan, you better keep your toolbox and
wallet handy.
