Challenges and opportunities
Among the top trends identified by the survey this year is the
continuing move to eliminate use of antibiotics, with 81% of respondents reporting some degree of antibiotic-free production in
their operations.
This change, however, is coming at a cost, demonstrated not
least by an increase in a variety of diseases.
Different producers would appear to be experiencing this
change in different ways, with some reporting lower feed costs while others note
an increase, but challenges adapting to this new approach seem to be common.
Continuing with the topic of antibiotic-free production, we look in detail at
an Israeli broiler producer that has made a success of working without antibiotics. While experiencing some difficulties along the way, production indicators
eventually registered an improvement and, bringing poultry meat produced
without antibiotics to market has resonated with consumers, with the company's
turnover increasing markedly after the change.

Keeping consumers, birds happy
Aligning with consumer demand is also discussed by our guest author, Vincent
Guyonnet, who looks at positioning eggs in the snack market.
Guyonnet was one of the speakers at the recent WATT Global Media Poultry
Trends Asia Seminar. Changing consumer tastes - including for antibiotic-free
meat - and demographics are combining to create a rapidly changing market,
increasingly driven by younger, wealthier consumers. For poultry meat and egg
producers, this provides numerous new opportunities, but comes with several
challenges.
That the consumer is king and demands ever-higher standards is echoed in
our look at the U.K.'s Red Tractor scheme, which has undergone several changes, including the addition of unannounced spot checks and a whistleblower's
hotline, and its organizers are upping efforts to communicate with the public.
Lastly, we make our regular visit to the poultry processing plant to see how
minimizing bird stress levels can contribute to maximizing output. ■
