Poultry International - August 2018 - 2
2 ❙ PoultryInternational EDITOR'S COMMENT BY MARK CLEMENTS A little forward planning Change is never easy, but a little forward planning can ease most transitions. We start this issue with a review of our WATT Global Media Poultry Trends event, held at VIV Europe in June. Our two speakers, drawn from the broiler and egg industries, highlighted the increasing influences on their respective sectors. We extend our thanks to Magnus Swalander and Erik Helmink for their fine contributions to the event. Following on from these key trends, we feature an interview with Chris Langholz, group president of Cargill Global Poultry, who gives insight into how the company is investing around the world and revealing where the company sees major growth potential. This will be the last name check for now, but we also welcome back Aviagen CEO Jan Henriksen who looks at the potential for poultry in Sub-Saharan Africa. We preview both events to help you decide. The Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards have recently been presented and, in our writeup, we focus particularly on a new technology that was recognized for its potential Follow Mark Clements in his blog www.WATTAgNet.com/MarkClements.html to totally eradicate the culling of male chicks across the egg industry. We also highlight the recipient of this year's Marketing Award and detail some of the other companies that were recognized. Air quality also comes under the spotlight in this issue as we look at the difficulties that can arise with ammonia and dust in cage-free layer systems, and how litter can be managed so that neither become major issues. In our monthly visit to the processing plant, maximizing yields during manual cutup and deboning come under the microscope. ■ Senior Art Director: Tess Stukenberg Production Manager: Jim Riedl jriedl@wattglobal.com Advertising Production Coordinator: Connie Miller SALES TEAM Northern Europe, Asia, Africa Frans Willem van Beemen fvanbeemen@wattglobal.com Tel: +31 344 653 442; Fax:+31 344 653 261 Southern Europe, Latin America Tineke van Spanje tvanspanje@wattglobal.com Tel: +31 495 526 155; Fax: +31 495 525 126 Southeast Asia Dingding Li, dingdingli@vip.163.com; Tel: +86 137 640 39062 USA/Canada Pam Ballard, pballard@wattglobal.com Tel: +1 815 966 5576; Fax: +1 815 968 0941 Mary Harris, mharris@wattglobal.com Tel: +1 815 980 5938; Fax: +1 847 908 7551 Community https://www.facebook.com/WATTAgNet www.youtube.com/WATTPoultryTV https://twitter.com/WATTAgNet www.linkedin.com/groups/WATT-AgNet-4855866 For article reprints and reprint quotes contact: FosteReprints +1 866 879 9144 www.fosterprinting.com
