Production of poultry meat in China is expected to decline for
the third consecutive year in 2018, as our cover story examines.
A major factor in this contraction has been disease, but not
simply inside the country's border; disease in those markets from
which China has become accustomed to importing genetic stock
has meant that the industry cannot access what it needs to grow.
It could be argued that this is somewhat of a self-inflicted
wound for the country, and perhaps a strong argument for accepting compartmentalization, which keeps trade going with parts of a country that are guaranteed disease free,
even if other parts of that country are experiencing disease outbreaks.
While not everyone agrees with the idea of compartmentalization, its acceptance
may become a growing necessity as demand for meat continues to rise, and there is little
hope of eliminating diseases, such as avian influenza, from wild birds.
